Cercle Laure Henry
43 Grande Rue, 77630 Barbizon
The place
Laure Henry (d. 1906) was a soprano and a member of the chorus of the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire de Paris, which she joined in 1845. Her elder sister Clarisse (1817–1896), also a soprano, had made her debut at the Opéra-Comique on 30 October 1840. Both gave lessons and led modest, quiet lives; when they withdrew from the Société des Concerts in 1870, they used the balance owed to them to buy a small house in Barbizon, where they settled for good. Laure died there on 3 December 1906.
The address later served for many years as the village's "Bibliothèque pour tous", a public reading room. The Cercle Laure Henry is today run by an association of lay Christians, hosting exhibitions and gatherings in the middle of the Grande Rue.
