Sentier des Peintres

This trail roughly follows the routes the Barbizon School painters took to reach their motifs in the forest. Over its 6 km the walker finds the same sequence they did: the village, then the forest edge, then the first sandstone chaos, then the silence of the tall Bas-Bréau woodland. The Rocher de l'Éléphant, one of the forest's curiosities, recalls the stone bestiary the Romantic painters loved. A walk where geology, botany and art history read together.
