Villa Élisabeth

30 Grande Rue, 77630 Barbizon

The place

At 30 Grande Rue, opposite Millet's studio, Roland Dorgelès rented the Villa Élisabeth. The author of Les Croix de bois (1919), his novel of the First World War trenches, wrote Le Château des brouillards here, and his friends came to hear his wife, Hania, sing.

He was one of the writers who made Barbizon their village between the wars, with André Billy, Francis Carco and André Rouveyre, when its reputation reached well beyond the painters.
