Cimetière de Barbizon
The place
You expect to find the graves of Millet and Rousseau here. They are not. In the nineteenth century Barbizon was only a hamlet of Chailly-en-Bière, and it was in the Chailly cemetery that Théodore Rousseau was buried in 1867, then Jean-François Millet in 1875, side by side, as their friendship demanded. Barbizon only became a commune in its own right in 1903, and its own cemetery was created in the years that followed.
It has since received the artists of later generations, who came in turn to the village for its light and its quiet. A modest, peaceful place, and a useful reminder that Barbizon's history spills well beyond its municipal boundaries.
