Maison de Charles Jacque
24 Grande Rue, 77630 Barbizon
The place
Charles Jacque came to Barbizon in 1849 with Jean-François Millet, as cholera was driving people out of Paris. A painter and engraver of flocks, sheepfolds and farmyards, he also turned his land into a small farm: he kept poultry of chosen breeds and grew the first asparagus in the village.
He left Barbizon for Anet, in the Eure-et-Loir, before 1868. The house later belonged to the painter Georges Gassies. Jeanne, his granddaughter, lived there until 2003 and died just before her hundredth birthday: a direct thread to the founding generation of Barbizon.
