La Bohème

The building

The building has a documented history on the Grande Rue. Before the current restaurant, it was La Bonne Auberge; before that, the Café Bouvard — a large café that served the village and its growing number of visitors in the early 1900s, when Barbizon was receiving over 100,000 visitors a year by tramway. This lineage is confirmed by the mairie of Barbizon's official village map. The building next door, no. 34 (Coz Ker), is where François Millet — a son of Jean-François Millet — and later Gustave Eiffel are recorded as having lived; the two properties are sometimes confused in local sources.
